The Totally Non-Serious Bit
Hey dudes,if like me you happened to notice the excellent Sega Megadrive
on the shelves in computer land, but then noticed that the fuckin' games
were 30-60 quid (on average) and didn't know what the hell to do then
look no further dudes!
Sega Megadrive
Irish prices: Shop
139.99 Premiere Computers
149.99 Peats World of Electronics
159.99 Virgin Megastore
Info on Megadrives sold in:
Premiere Computers
The megadrive sold here is a japanese import, not however a cheapo grey
import. It looks almost identical to the Uk version, well except for the
japanese writing on the box. There should be no problems with resoution
on a standard TV,however some Japanese or US games will only run on a
60hz screen. If you're TV is only a 50hz model the screen will jump and
flicker,in short it will be impossible to see whats on the screen if this
happens so make sure you're TV is a nice new model (Phillips TV's are
cool). If you have an older TV don't worry because I think you can buy a
lovely gadget from KC Games in the UK for 25 pounds sterling, the bad
thing about this is it invalidates you're warranty (altogether now---
"Aw Shit!").In Premiere Computers you don't get a single game with the
Megadrive, but for 169.99 you get a game which is picked by the actual
shop!!!All in all the machine sold here is an excellent buy as it runs
UK,US and Japanese cartridges.I heard a strange rumour that the Japanese
Megadrive sold here actually translates the Japanese text into English,
but I can't be sure....
Peats World Of Electronics
The Megadrive sold here is a standard UK version with Altered Beast thrown
in,Japanese or US games will not work on this unless a special adaptor
costing twenty odd pounds is bought.
Virgin Megastore
Again a standard UK machine which will not run Jappo or American games.
Sonic The Hedgehog is thrown into the package and it is rumoured that
Altered Beast is in there as well.Good value with the games and Sonic is
brilliant.
The boring techy bit
The Megadrive has a pallette of only 512 colours but can show an amazing
64 colours on screen at once! The actual game carts are 512k but can go
as high as 1,536k.The joypads are cool looking and fit well into your
hand (oi!Stop thinking about that!) they also have 3 different buttons.
The Powerstick can be bought for approx 39.99.The MD can run Master System
games with the help of the powerbase converter (29.99 sterling) but hey,
who'd be bothered with crappy Master System carts? The CPU is a Motorola
68000,supported by custom chips and a Zilog Z80 used by the Powerbase. The
graphics chip offers a screen resolution of 320x240 pixels. The amazing
stereo sound has to be heard to be believed, offering 12 sound channels
providing even better sound than Creed's 4 sound channel music (er, only
just dude!).
Well thats it for now about the Megadrive, shit I forgot to mention the
Mega-CD.Well more about the Mega-CD next ish!
Typed as always by,
The Immortal...Peter!
